We’ve all heard about the nine celestial bodies in Hindu astrology — but how exactly did Rahu and Ketu come into existence? How did they join the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn to form the Navagrahas? And why are these shadow planets worshipped? Rahu Ketu takes this age-old mythological tale and brings it alive on screen with an engaging visual narrative.
While Samuthirakani appears as Lord Shiva only in a few scenes, his presence leaves a deep imprint on the film. Kasturi, portraying Goddess Durga, delivers a dignified performance, while Vignesh as Lord Vishnu fits seamlessly into his role. Both manage to linger in the audience’s memory well after the scenes have passed.
Balasundaram, not just the film’s protagonist but also its director, handles his role with ease, matched by the sincerity of the supporting cast, each fulfilling their part without faltering.
Music plays its role in enhancing the storytelling — Sada Sudarsan’s songs and Bharani Dharan’s background score move in rhythm with the visuals, never overpowering them. Mohan Prasath’s cinematography captures the grandeur of the divine themes, while editor B. Lenin’s crisp cuts ensure the narrative flows smoothly.
The myth of Rahu and Ketu is familiar to many, but watching it unfold in cinematic form brings a fresh fascination. K.P. Arivanandham’s story, screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics are simple yet effective, making the film easy to follow without diluting the essence. The addition of a well-crafted sub-plot alongside the main myth strengthens the script further.
Director D. Balasundaram has managed to tell a story we’ve long known in a way that still holds attention. While certain aspects of the making show rough edges, the storytelling keeps Rahu Ketu engaging from start to finish.
Verdict: Despite minor flaws in execution, Rahu Ketu succeeds in turning a familiar myth into an enjoyable cinematic experience.
