An Emotional Drama Rooted in Reality – Rajakili Movie Review

Rajakili, directed by debutant Umapathy Ramiah, unfolds as a gripping drama inspired by real-life events. With a mix of emotions, crime, and familial chaos, this film sheds light on the consequences of moral missteps and the strength of human relationships.

At its heart, Rajakili follows the life of Appuchi Murugappa, played by veteran actor Thambi Ramiah. Despite being a third-standard dropout, Appuchi’s journey to becoming a successful businessman is both inspiring and layered with moral dilemmas. The story takes a dark turn as Appuchi succumb to illicit affairs, leading to devastating consequences that fracture his family and his own life.

Samuthirakani enters as a key character, building a bond with the broken Appuchi, adding emotional depth to the narrative. The courtroom drama in the climax ties together the story’s loose ends, leaving the audience with a blend of heartbreak and reflection.

Thambi Ramiah surprises the audience with his nuanced performance, shedding his usual over-the-top style for a more subtle and emotional portrayal. While Samuthirakani delivers as expected with his typical acting style, the supporting casts Suveta Shrimpton, Miyashree Sowmya, Deepa Shankar, Daniel Pope, Aadukalam Naren, Aruldass, and Pazha Karuppiah provide solid support, each bringing authenticity to their roles.

Umapathy Ramiah shows promise as a director, though not without a few missteps. The cinematography by Kedarnath S. and S. Gopinath effectively captures the raw essence of the film, and R. Sudharshan’s editing ensures the story flows well. Notably, Thambi Ramiah makes his debut as a music director, delivering a score that complements the film’s emotional beats.

Produced by Suresh Kamatchi under V House Productions, Rajakili is a one-time watch for its emotional narrative and the effort to bring a real-life story to the big screen. While it has its flaws, the movie is a testament to Thambi Ramiah’s versatility as a writer, actor, and now, music director.
