Bad Girl Teaser Launch: A Celebration of Firsts and Feminist Storytelling

The much-anticipated teaser for the film Bad Girl was launched in style at Sathyam Cinemas, Chennai, on January 26, 2025. Produced by acclaimed filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Vetrimaaran under the banner of Grass Root Film Company, the film stars Anjali Sivaraman, Shanthi Priya, Hridhu Harun, TeeJay Arunachalam and Saranya Ravichandran. Directed by Varsha Bharath, a former assistant of Vetrimaaran, the project marks a milestone in Tamil cinema.

The star-studded teaser launch was graced by producers Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap, lead actors, and esteemed guests, including producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu, director Mysskin and actress Taapsee Pannu.

Speaking at the event, producer Vetrimaaran shared the journey of Bad Girl, revealing how the story stood out to him and Anurag Kashyap. Initially delayed due to other commitments, the project gained momentum during the making of Viduthalai 2, when Kashyap was captivated by the film’s concept. He not only committed to producing the film but also brought on board renowned composer Amit Trivedi, marking his Tamil film debut.

Vetrimaaran highlighted the significance of the film’s inclusion in the prestigious Tiger Competition section at the Rotterdam Film Festival, emphasizing the “Many Firsts” associated with Bad Girl.

Lead actress Anjali Sivaraman, who plays the central character Ramya, expressed her initial hesitation about shouldering a story centered entirely around her. However, the trust placed in her by Vetrimaaran and director Varsha Bharath helped her bring authenticity to the role. “The character of Ramya reflects my own life in many ways,” she shared.

Director Mysskin lauded Varsha Bharath’s dedication to filmmaking, noting her deep understanding of cinema and ability to capture raw emotions through close-up shots. “This female-oriented psychological drama is something only a feminist director could have made,” he remarked, praising the courage behind the project.

Actress Taapsee Pannu applauded the film for breaking away from the male-centric narratives often seen in cinema. She remarked, “It’s rare to see films about women, and even rarer to have them directed by women. This makes Bad Girl special.”

Producer Anurag Kashyap described the film as a story only Varsha Bharath could tell. “This isn’t just a story about women but a film that allows men to understand the world of women,” he said, predicting its impact on audiences.

Director Varsha Bharath shared her inspiration, stating, “Bad Girl is a story that portrays women as human beings with real emotions and thoughts, challenging traditional portrayals as saints or goddesses.”

Vetrimaaran concluded the event with praise for Varsha’s dedication, emphasizing the belief the cast and crew had in the project. He called Bad Girl a proud addition to Grass Root Film Company’s portfolio and a film destined to succeed at festivals and beyond.

The event ended with the release of the film’s poster, leaving attendees excited for this groundbreaking addition to Tamil cinema.
