Love stories are familiar territory in Tamil cinema, but ‘Ram And Leela’ attempts to give the genre a different flavour by combining romance with humour, family emotions and a central mystery surrounding the female lead.

Rio plays Ram, a young man whose repeated attempts to find a suitable bride end without success. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Leela, played by debutante Vartika. What begins as a simple romantic relationship gradually becomes complicated when Leela places an unusual restriction on their meetings.

Initially, Ram accepts the condition without giving it much thought. But as their relationship progresses, his curiosity begins to grow. Why does Leela have to leave him at a particular time? What is the reason behind her unusual routine? The search for answers becomes the driving force of the screenplay.

The film cleverly uses this mystery to keep the audience curious during the first half. Instead of revealing everything immediately, director Ramachandrran Kannan allows the questions to build before taking the story in a completely different direction.

Rio is one of the film’s major strengths. His portrayal of Ram combines innocence, romance and comedy. His reactions to unexpected situations provide several entertaining moments, while the emotional portions give him an opportunity to move beyond pure comedy. He particularly scores in scenes where Ram struggles to understand the truth surrounding Leela.

Vartika makes a promising debut as Leela. Her character carries an important secret, and the actress handles both the romantic portions and the more emotionally demanding moments with confidence. The chemistry between Rio and Vartika works reasonably well and forms the emotional foundation of the film.

The supporting cast adds considerable value. Chetan and Malavika Avinash are convincing as Ram’s parents, while Munishkanth, Deepa Venkat, Makapa Anand, Balaji Thiyagarajan Dayalan and Thaafia Abu contribute effectively in their respective roles. KAVINN GT and the other supporting artistes also add to the film’s overall character ensemble.

Writer-director Ramachandrran Kannan deserves credit for attempting to present an unusual premise through the framework of a romantic family entertainer. The film does not depend entirely on the mystery; it also spends time developing the relationship between Ram and Leela and introducing the family dynamics around them.

The screenplay has its share of uneven moments, particularly when the narrative takes time to establish certain situations. However, the second half gains momentum as the central mystery is gradually explained. The emotional conflict created by the revelation gives the romantic track more weight than it initially appears to have.

Mallaikarjun’s cinematography gives the film a bright and attractive visual appearance. The romantic portions are particularly pleasing to watch, while the family scenes are captured in a manner that suits the film’s light-hearted tone.

Ankit Menon’s music complements the romantic and emotional portions effectively. The background score also supports the changing moods of the story without overpowering the scenes.

YNC Shiva’s editing keeps the narrative reasonably smooth. While the first half could have benefited from tighter pacing, the editing becomes more effective as the story enters its crucial portions, particularly during the comedy-driven sequences and the latter half.

Produced by R. Ravindran and Sudharsan under the banners of Trident Arts and Eywa Entertainment, ‘Ram And Leela’ is ultimately an attempt to blend romance, comedy, family sentiment and an unusual central idea into an accessible entertainer.

The film may not be flawless, but it succeeds in creating curiosity around its core mystery and delivers enough humour and emotion to keep the audience engaged. Rio’s performance, Vartika’s debut, the supporting cast and the unusual premise work in its favour.
